The Five Happiest Countries in the World
The 2015 edition of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network’s World Happiness Report is out. It lists the five happiest countries.
Drumroll, please…
- Switzerland
- Iceland
- Denmark
- Norway
- Canada
Isn’t that interesting? Every one of the five is a social democracy with a strong safety net. The four European countries are also known for their leadership in reducing energy consumption and carbon footprint; in fact, Iceland’s stationery power needs are met almost entirely through (renewable, clean) geothermal and hydro. These are countries that take care of their own. Their citizens correctly assume that medical care, education, and so forth are their right, and that government will do what it can to assist in preserving the earth as human habitat. The social services are funded by higher taxes than we pay in the US, but they get something for their money. And none of them are highly militarized or known for excessive violence. (Yes the Swiss do have universal male military service— but they don’t fight wars, and in my two trips to Switzerland, I’ve hardly even seen a soldier.)
Despite the cold climates where all five are located, these are happy people.
Now, if only we could get politicians in the US to pay attention.
You bet it is…100%
I love to travel, and the Philippines is definitely on my list.
I hope that is a serious offer, Federico DelaCruz II
You should come to the Philippines someday Shel. Ill be your tourguide…but I think it is mainly enchanted to me because of my bloodline. Poverty is not so enchanting to most.
Too many Americans are abysmally ignorant, and confuse capitalism with democracy and/or freedom. What a tragedy that we never got to see the birth of FDR’s Second Bill of Rights, and the fulfillment of the New Deal.

Federico: My understanding is that Iceland had a huge banking collapse in 2008 and has been considered recovered since 2011. It led to some politicians leaving office, & indictments against more than a dozen bank officers. The opposite of what the U.S. did.
But very dirty fossil fueled economies.
Federico DelaCruz II I didn’t conduct the study. Was a bit surprised to see Iceland on the list. On energy, as Ted Cartselos points out, they are a world leader (I’ve written about this). As a destination, I enjoyed my stay but was not enchanted. Now Turkey, Guetamala–those were enchanting.

Yeah, but they are practically 100% geothermal!
Dont know about this one Shel. Iceland is bankrupt and last I saw them on the news rioting because the govt kept all their tax refunds…
All five countries you listed are cold and white. I prefer a warm beach and music.

“Happy” is not a goal America has for its citizens. Not life or liberty, either.
