Permaculture Takes Root at Occupy Wall Street
I love this! Recognizing that they need to be part of the solution and not just the agitation, permaculture experts have started some deep green initiatives including graywater recycling–at Zuccotti Park in lower Manhattan, home to the original Occupy Wall Street demonstration/encampment.
Once again, the protests remind me of the remarkable communities we had during the Seabrook occupation and our subsequent incarceration at various national guard armories, back in 1977.
Note: if they can do permaculture in an impermanent camp in a city park, we should be able to do it all over the country and the world in our permanent dwellings.
I so love the idea of using this movement not only to draw attention to what is wrong but provide alternative solutions that are more sustainable. Very cool!
Most certainly cool. they remind me of the Clamshell Alliance in 1977 (of which I was a proud member, arrested at Seabrook). Even after our arrest, when we were locked into various National Guard armories, we created all sorts of amazing alternative governance structures. Ever see 700 people reach consensus consistently through a small-to-large-group hub-and-spoke delegation process? Quite something to see.
I love this too.
I just heard there was a general strike in Oakland. I also learned that Oakland is our fifth largest port.
What a great combination- agitation, experimentation and creative solutions.
Yes, things are happening very fast out there. The original police response was pretty over-the-top, and I’m thrilled that the response was to call a general strike (we should have had one after the GWB coup in 2000). I had no idea until the last couple of weeks that Oakland hands so much freight shipping.
How right you are Shel! I’m following this movement closely (there’s a rally in Springfield at BOA on Saturday 11/5 at 10 am) and I think the number and originality of OWS offshoots are amazing!
I hadn’t known about the Springfield demo, hope it was good. I don’t know why WordPress only bothered to let me know today that there were new comments.
