Ostriches of the Ultra-Right: Carbon Belch Day
Talk about head-in-the-sand behavior! Apparently June 12 was Carbon Belch Day:
Proud of their antisocial behavior, these ninnies wanted to be as environmentally destructive as possible that day, asking people to
oppose U.S. participation in the Kyoto treaty or any such successor agreement, mandatory domestic limits on CO2, and any federal or state carbon “tax” or “cap-and-trade” system — including the current Lieberman-Warner bill.
One could make a good case for opposing Lieberman-Warner on the gorunds that its cap-and-trade system is essentially a giveaway to polluters–but that’snot the argument being made here.
What’s next: Celebrate Racism Day with the KKK?
I don’t think the point was to be as environmentally destructive, and one of the parts of the pledge was “I do this with no fear or concern that I am destroying the planet.”
I didn’t participate in the day, but I appreciate their efforts. Environmentalists do a lot to hamper people’s lives (through legislation like Kyoto or Lieberman-Warner), but I think it could be argued that the worst thing they do is get people to accept guilt that they don’t deserve. The Carbon Belch day seemed to be about people who are fighting back against that guilt. Good for them!
